U16G - EH Cup vs Horsham
Result: 4-1
MoM: Ella Williams and Ellie Chester
Report:
Set in the incredible grounds of Christ’s Hospital Alton took on Horsham HC U16 girls in the tier 2 England Hockey Cup.
We knew this would be a competitive game & Horsham didn’t disappoint as we watched great skill from both teams & end to end hockey.
Alton managed to take an early lead after skilful play from Ella W pushing the ball forwards and supporting the front line. Monica got in to the D & scored the first goal of the match with a reverse stick shot. Alton know that you can’t rest on your laurels against a team like Horsham so kept up the attack. Monica managed to hit the ball across the goal and Ella R secured it popping the ball in on the far post for the 2nd goal.
Horsham realised what they were up against and attacked back hard at the Alton goal. The defensive back line, Jemima, Esme and Jess had to work hard as the Horsham front line played intelligent and skill full hockey. Horsham switched play round & overloaded the goal on every opportunity. Keeper Ellie was able to give a strong message to the Horsham attack as she made multiple saves from slide outs, dives and kicks.
The pass accuracy from the defence to clear the ball from Jemima, Esme, Jess and Daisy was fantastic. They backed each other up and remained calm despite the strong opposition. Zoe as captain led the team brilliantly with great communication & strong leadership, stabilising the team.
After a period of defending Alton were on the attack again. India and Ella W continued to put great balls through and enabled the team to attack Horsham's goal again. This eventually led to a ball through to Ella R who managed to dummy the last defender, only to be stopped by the keeper but winning a short corner for the team. Although unable to convert 1st and 2nd time the third short corner went to the top and was slipped to Monica who managed to hit the backboard.
As Alton grew in confidence, Horsham reminded them that they were still in the game. Alton’s defence and midfield continued to be challenged and Sophie appeared to have multiplied as she ran up and down the pitch to support her team mates. With Daisy joining the back line, the team had a new found confidence to play the ball around the back and to switch the direction of play.
Horsham made some great runs down the wings and made a number of attempts on Alton’s goal. The defence remained calm and collected and Ellie made double and triple saves to keep the ball out of the goal including a save on the left post followed by a second shot and right hand dive stick save from the Alton keeper. At this point we expected Horsham to give up, but they have a strong psychology and never relented.
As the end to end hockey continued Esme stepped up and managed some well timed tackles. Lilly continued to clear the ball effectively and Jemima continued to keep the opposition wide recovering well to keep the pressure on Horsham's players and forcing mistakes. Hannah and Jess continued to push the ball down the left wing and to pressure Horsham. But Horsham took their opportunities and after being awarded a short corner managed to put a goal past the Alton keeper and defence from a drag flick.
Alton put a final shift in. A long corner from Ella W to Monica resulted in a strong strike at the top of the D to score Alton’s 4th and final goal of the game. Horsham were not deflated though and after some well executed passes they were back in the Alton D and awarded a short corner as the final whistle blew. With the whole of the Horsham team ready to attack and score a final goal, the strike was cleared with a strong kick by Ellie and the final whistle was blown. The final score was 4-1. Great play by everyone.
